He was appalling, wasn’t he? Smirky, disdainful, smug, and simplistic. But actually, I thought the whole environment was problematic.
The Democratic convention had gravitas: serious people coming together to solve serious problems with serious ideas. The GOP convention, in contrast, seems like a high school pep rally: snide jokes and “U! S! A!”ing.
Palin’s vaunted executive experience is a good example of that — one does not achieve executive experience by being the mayor of a 7000-person town or the governor of a 600,000-person state (for half of one term). That idea is the verbal equivalent of finger-waving, a sort of brainless “We’re number one!” designed to make witless high school students stamp their feet.
Oh the whole thing made me ill. Obama praised McCain. He acknowledged his service to our country. The ONLY remark, that I recall, that could even sort of, possibly, maybe, be considered snarky or snide was when Obama said “that’s a debate I’m ready to have” when he mentioned temperament to lead. A swift and slight jab at McCain’s saying Obama doesn’t have the right temperament when we all know McCain has some anger management issues he needs to sort through.
This was just dirty, ugly, and mean.
And what has McCain governed that Obama hasn’t? Aren’t they both Senators? And doesn’t their resume only include State and Federal Senate? McCain was a pilot, not a commander.
As for Palin - we should leave your kids out of the campaign so that you can freely exploit them? I think it’s wrong to use a candidate’s kids, however SHE brought HER kids into it!! And parading that poor infant around. Nathan was a perfectly healthy four month old and there is no way in hell I would have had him in a filled arena at 10 at night. No way!
Urgh. The whole is just crass and low brow. Pandering.
I think he was pretty successful in dealing with NYC in the aftermath of 9/11. I lost some respect when he tried to change his last day in office because “the city needs me”. I lost a little more when he purposely brought the media into his divorce. But last night was it. That was low-class and trashy of him.
I lived in NYC during his time as a prosecutor and Mayor. I guess your right that he handled The City as well as anyone could after 9/11 but sadly, I already had no respect for him at that point!
