Dear Mr. Sorkin,

Watched your new episode of Studio 60 last night. It is starting to grow on me and I actually find myself laughing aloud several times an evening. However, last night there some glaring problems with your research.

Jordon is supposedly twelve weeks pregnant. And yet she had to have the vaginal ultrasound? Really? I’m quite a bit heavier than either the fictional Jordon or Amanda Peet and I graduated to the abdominal ultrasound at nine weeks. Oh! And the doctor telling her they might be able to see the gender of the baby at twelve weeks? Maybe you should have your staff google pregnancy.

Now let’s talk about the earthquake. I realize you needed something to bring about the need to use the coconuts for snow as that was funny. Especially the drill press. However, a 4.1 earthquake wouldn’t wake a native Californian out a light nap, let alone cause causalities, the collapse of buildings, or the destruction of a major freeway in Los Angeles. Just a quick glance at the usgs.gov website would have told you that a 4.0 earthquake isn’t even labeled moderate. It’s considered light. Light earthquakes don’t cause the damage your show depicted.

It really is turning into a good, solid watch-able hour of television. However, glaring mistakes in the research and thus the writing make it really hard to concentrate on the funny.

Just thought you should know.

  1. One was also struck by the repeated assertions that Jesus was an African born in North Africa and should therefore not look like a Bee Gee.

I agree that he shouldn’t look like a Bee Gee; that’s a powerful general truth, which is also true of the Bee Gees. However, calling Bethlehem part of Africa seems to be an expansionist concept of Africa designed to annex the mideast (including what is now Israel).

Also, not all people in North Africa even looked particularly African. At that time North Africa was ruled, and partly populated, by Greeks, the most famous of whom was Cleopatra (a classically Greek name which means “glory of her father”).

  2. Thanks for pointing out all the Studio 60 errors! I’m starting to like the show too, and was just cracking up over all the errors they have made with Jordan’s pregnancy. Another thing, if she is 12 weeks right now in December, she wouldn’t be having the baby in May. I’m 15 weeks and not due until May 29 (for a singleton). My twin factor might up it a little.

Thanks for the comment on my blog. Good advice!
