1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I am a very big fan of natural fibers. I’ve recently done projects in silk, alpaca, and merino wool. I’m currently working with 100% cotton. I’m not a big fan of acrylic, not so much because I’m a yarn snob – although I can be, but because you can’t block it. If you can’t block how do you get it to be the size and shape you want? Or how do you cover up your mistakes with your guage? Blocking is your friend, my friend.
2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
My needles are in a vase on my desk – like a great big, pointy flower arrangement.
3. How long have you been knitting? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I learned last Christmas so I’d classify myself as a beginner. Others would classify me as a beginner too. I’m doing yarn overs and slipped stitches and other stuff. I find I knit when I’m doing other things – riding in the car, watching tv, etc. – so I tend to chose simple, mind-less projects. Zen knitting!
4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
I do! It’s over there on the right side of the screen. Under “Hoard!”
5. What’s your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
Either lavendar – which is incredibly calming to me, or something spicy – which awakes your senses. But not combined. Combined would freak your senses right on out!
6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I have an incredible sweet tooth. However, I’m working on taming my sweet tooth; right now I’m using a whip and a chair seems to be doing the job.
7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
As a graphic designer by profession I naturally gravitate towards lots of creative outlets. Aside from knitting, I enjoy my camera, garden, clay, and paint – in no particular order – the mostest. I haven’t taken up spinning.
8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
My iPod has everything from country to hip-hop to jazz to heavy metal to, well I listen to everything. I’ve got an Apple computer and they can do and play everything because they rock the block. They do. Haven’t you seen the commercial with Warren from Ed playing the Mac and handing the geek that is sneezing a tissue. Because he has a virus. Cracks me up!
9. What’s your favorite color? Or–do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can’t stand?
Pink! Every shade of it. Until you hit the peachy side of the spectrum. Ick with peach. Peach is not a color you find in nature. It isn’t. Go outside and look. I’ll wait. See? No peach. Peaches aren’t even peach.
In terms of color palettes I’m an autumn person – blue eyes and red hair. Plus pink. Love the pink.
10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
My family situation is lovely – thanks for asking. David and I share space with a 15 year old Princess Kitty. Mostly we get out of her way. She has long since lost her ability to share.
11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
At the same time? No. Living in California there just isn’t much call for warm knitted outerwear. However, on occasion I’ve been known to wear a scarf. Or mittens. Very rarely a hat. Never a poncho. I do wear shawls or wraps though.
12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Big rectangle things.
13. What are you knitting right now?
Prayer shawls for two different moms. Neither of which are my own. I have a wrap on needles for me, but I never seem to find the time for stuff for me.
14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
As long as they aren’t edible, of course! Who doesn’t like gifts? Handmade or otherwise.
15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
I’m a straights kind of girl. Wood is my favorite for zen knitting. There is something incredibly compelling about wooden needles. They get warm and soft as you knit with them. If I set one down to count stitches David picks it up and absentmindedly plays with it.
However, if I’m going for speed I like the aluminums. Plus, they come in all kinds of pretty colors. I have one pair of plastics and they were a gift. Need I say more?
16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
I have David and a handheld mixer. Does that count? I actually enjoy rolling by hand. Again with the zen thing. Not to mention I’m technically working on my project even if I don’t have the needles in my hand.
17. How did you learn to knit?
My best friend taught me over the summer and I forgot before I got on the plane to come home. David’s sister-in-law taught me again over Christmas. This time it stuck and then blossomed into the obsession it is today.
18. How old is your oldest UFO?
About a month. I have free floating guilt over unfinished projects.
19. What is your favorite holiday?
Eliza Doolittle Day! Or Christmas. It depends on which is closer at the moment.
20. Is there anything that you collect?
Aside from yarn?
21. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
The internet has made magazines obsolete for me. They collect dust – to which I am allergic – and take up space. I do have some books on my amazon wish list though.
22. Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn?
I’m always open to learning new thing! Learning is good for you. Like brussel sprouts, but without the bitter taste.
23. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
I am not a sock knitter. I do have wee small though: from tip of big toe to end they’re 8.75″ and they’re 8″ around at the ball of my foot. Huh. They don’t look round.
24. When is your birthday? (mm/dd)
05/20
